Fully Funded MFAs in Creative Writing

Update in progress. We aim to finish this list by November 1, 2020.

Below is a list of creative writing MFA and PhD programs that fully fund ALL of their students. Programs that do not meet our definition of full funding but in practice fund the majority of their students are on the Mostly Funded MFAs in Creative Writing List. If your program is missing or you notice any inaccuracies, please contact us.

We define a fully funded program as one that provides both tuition remission and a stipend to EVERY admitted student. We cannot guarantee this list will remain accurate from year to year but we will keep it as up to date as possible. If you’re unsure about the status of a program’s funding, it’s always best to ask them directly.

We have occasionally been contacted by people offered unfunded admission to programs that market themselves to applicants as fully funded and were listed on this website. When people bring this complaint to us, we place the program on our partially funded list for two years with a note explaining that the funding information on that program’s website is incorrect. If, at the end of those two years, nobody else has been offered an unfunded position, then the program will move back to this list, but the year of the last unfunded offer will still be noted. Not fully disclosing your program’s financial status to applicants is unethical.

All students admitted to the MFA program are guaranteed up to four years of full financial support, though the program can be completed in three years. All admitted students qualify for graduate assistantships, which include a stipend paid over nine months (currently $14,125), and full payment of up to 15 credit hours of graduate tuition (but not fees). Graduate Council Fellowships ($15,000–$20,000 plus full tuition), McNair Graduate Fellowships ($15,000 plus full tuition), National Alumni Association Fellowships ($15,000 plus full tuition), Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Scholarships ($20,000), Truman Capote Fellowships (the award for these positions can vary), Truman Capote Prison Arts Fellowships ($15,000), and editorial positions with Black Warrior Review (the award for these positions can vary) are also available. First-year graduate assistants with fewer than 18 hours of prior graduate coursework in English will be assigned to work in the Writing Center, serve under the supervision of a faculty member as small section discussion leaders for 200-level literature lecture courses, or be assigned other duties as appropriate. In the second year and beyond, graduate assistants routinely teach two courses per semester.

Individual programs additionally offer one-time or ongoing stipend enhancements from our Capote, Loomis, and Harrison funds. New and returning graduate students are also eligible for awards other than assistantships, including Dean’s Merit Assistantships ($6000 enhancements to the assistantship stipend, renewable for a total of three years), Alumni Heritage Scholarships ($500), and Teaching Awards (open to all students who have taught at least 4 semesters). The department has use of the Henry E. Jacobs Fund and the Miriam Locke Scholarship to help with graduate student research and conference travel expenses. The Graduate School and the College of Arts & Sciences also offer significant assistance with research and travel costs. The Student Government Association and the department’s own English Graduate Organization are additional sources of research and travel funding, along with the Capstone International Center, which allocates funding for international research and travel.

The Graduate School will provide single-coverage health insurance for each assistantship.

NOTE: Funding for some students at this university has been rescinded as of April 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19. We are not moving the university to our partially funded list just yet, but may do so later. The MFA program has said during a phone call that they will know about funding for the 2021-2022 year by mid-October.

All students admitted to the MFA program who submit a complete and approved teaching assistantship application are awarded a teaching assistantship by the Department of English worth $18,564 per year. Each assistantship carries a three-course-per-year load and includes a tuition and fees waiver. Graduate students with assistantships must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours each semester.

Graduate College fellowships and a small number of research assistantships provide other sources of funding. Research assistantships are not typically awarded for the first year. Additionally, eligible MFA students are invited each year to participate in award programs including (but not limited to) the Aleida Rodriguez Memorial Award in Creative Writing, the English Department’s Glendon and Kathryn Swarthout Awards in Writing, and the Katharine C. Turner Award from the Academy of American Poets. The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing also offers summer travel fellowships and research awards, and awards for summer teaching in Singapore.

Health insurance is included as a benefit of the assistantship.

Additionally, our students compete each year for several Walton Fellowships of $14,000 and several James T. Whitehead Fellowships.

Students also compete for Lily Peter Fellowships of $1,000 or greater. Other graduate fellowships worth $4,000 per year for up to four years also may be available for academically qualified candidates. Teaching assistantships provide full tuition coverage. MFA students on assistantship are also assigned to teach one undergraduate composition or creative writing course per quarter (three courses per academic year). MFA students receive academic credit as well as a nine-month salary for teaching. For 2020-2021, students will earn an estimated $21,911.49 for the academic year. Out-of-state students admitted into the program are required to file for California residency by the end of their first year in order to continue receiving financial support. Assistantships come with 100% fee remission for student services fees and $100 remission of the campus services fees, which came to approximately $850 in the 2020-2021 school year. As a state-funded institution, UC Irvine has very limited financial support available for international students. Unfortunately, full financial support is rarely possible. The Graduate Division also offers Chancellor’s Club Fellowships, Eugene-Cota Robles Fellowships, Dean’s Dissertation Fellowships, Dean’s Recruitment Fellowships, Graduate Opportunity Fellowships, President’s Dissertation Year Fellowships, and Public Impact Fellowships.

The Graduate Division also offers supplemental funding in the form of Diversity Recruitment Fellowships, Brython Davis Fellowships, Gordon Hein Scholarships, Inclusive Excellence Ambassador Fellowships, La Verne Noyes Fellowships, Miguel Velez Fellowships, Nevin Graduate Endowment Fellowships, Otto W. Shaler Scholarships, Phi Beta Kappa International Scholarships, Public Impact Fellowships, and Tom Angell Fellowships. The Associated Graduate Students provides Emergency Travel Grants, Commitment to a Better Education Grants, and Project Funds for improving the graduate student experience at UC Irvine. The Humanities Office of Graduate Study offers funding for conference travel, outstanding TA awards, and awards for summer language study. The Humanities Center offers funding in the form of research grants and grants for graduate students organizing conferences at UC Irvine.

Students receive university health insurance (medical, dental, and vision).

All students are guaranteed two years of tuition and fee remission and a stipend. In the first year, students work a graduate assistantship with EPOCH. Students read submissions, plan special issues and assume other editorial and administrative responsibilities. Students will also be awarded a summer teaching assistantship, linked to a teachers’ training program. Summer residency in Ithaca is required. In the second year, students will receive a teaching assistantship and a summer fellowship (made possible by the David L. Picket ’84 Fund and The James McConkey Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Award for Summer Support, established by his enduringly grateful student, Len Edelstein ’59). Students may also apply for one- or two-year MFA lecturer appointments after receiving the degree.

The department also awards writing prizes, and travel funds are available through the President’s Travel Fund and Timothy Murray Graduate Travel Grants. Research travel grants and conference travel grants are also available.
